So in this guide I will try define abuse, proper, and improper conduct.

So moderators are peacekeepers of the community. They are designed to keep order and prevent toxic and destructive players from ruining other player's gameplay experience. So in a way, mods are responsible for improving player's gameplay experience. A lot of people do this job wrong, they have their list of punishable actions and they instantly jump to use power over a player. This job isn't about using power over players, it's about keeping the peace.

Let's go over some situations and show examples of right and wrong things to do.

If someone is spamming, flooding the chat
    [IMG]
    Right action:
Give them a verbal warning. "Playername, please stop spamming" Wait 10 seconds for the player to read your message. If ten seconds later, if they stop, then don't punish, if the player failed to heed your warning and proceeds to spam, you may now use your moderator powers to prevent that player from talking. /mute playername 10 minutes.
If you remember this player spamming/flooding chat earlier the same day, you can incrementally increase their punishment. 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours.
note: If it is a repeat offender i still want you to warn them, but you don't have to wait 10 seconds for them to read the message, you can just tell them what they did wrong, and deliver punishment, but uh, try to reset the "repeat offender" thing in your mind daily. Someone might just change their behavior, and you don't want to abusively crack down on them for something they did earlier this week.

    Wrong action:
If someone sends two similar looking messages back to back, warning them and muting them for spam. It's got to be three-four+ messages.

    Wrong action:
If someone is spamming and you mute them for a long time without saying anything

    Wrong action:
If someone sends 3 messages in two seconds, and you warn and mute them.
It's got to be more than 3 messages, it's got to be disruptive. Like 4-5 messages.

    Wrong action:
someone sends 5 messages in 2-3 seconds and you mute them without warning

    Swearing:
Same concepts apply here. Try to tolerate minor swearing, don't just nazi around telling everyone to watch their mouth. However if someone for example swears more than 3 times in a minute, give them a verbal warning. If you remember this swearing earlier the same day, you can incrementally increase their punishment. 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours.

If someone does swear one time, you can warn them, but not punish them.

Wrong action: instantly muting someone when they swear.
Wrong action: punishing people for swearing after they swore once.
    Wrong action: punishing without warning.

    Advertising:
Sometimes people will advertising, websites, minecraft servers, youtube videos.

If someone advertises something once, give them a warning, if they advertise again, mute them for 10 minutes.

If someone is spam advertising, as in, sending the same advertising message more than once, and quickly, this is the only time you can mute for 12 hours without warning. This person obviously came on the server to advertise to our community and genuinely is not interested in playing the server.

Again use scaling punishment for repeat offence 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours. And again if they spam advertise then just mute for 12 hours with no warning, but always warn in all other cases.

    Hacking:
If someone is blatantly cheating and ruining the gameplay experience for other players watch them closely while being invisible. You can "/tempban playername 1 week hacking" but only if you are absolutely sure they are hacking. If you ban an innocent player, you will be fired, keep that in mind every single time you ban a hacker. Also, right before you ban, make sure to tell them. "playername, i am going to ban you for use of cheats/hackedclients/3rdparty applications", "please uninstall your cheats", then you can ban them.

wrong action: banning someone based on someone elses ward
wrong action: banning someone without warning them you are banning them
wrong action: banning someone you are unsure is hacking
wrong action: not spending time invisible to make sure the person is cheating

Again if you ban innocent people you will be demoted. It's a good idea to install open broadcaster software https://obsproject.com/download so that you can keep a recording of every person you banned so that you can defend yourself when being challanged for abuse.

If you feel any mod is not following these guidelines and instead, using their mod privileges how they see fit, report them here. http://squadcraft.net/forums/abuse-reports.7/
Moderators that abuse will be quickly demoted.
