Hello everyone, So I was recently diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder) Now if you don't know what that is, here is a brief summary: A disorder in which a person is unable to control behavior due to difficulty in processing neural stimuli, accompanied by an extremely high level of motor activity. Abbreviated ADHD. ADHD can affect children and adults, but it is easiest to perceive during schooling. A child with ADHD may be extremely distractible, unable to remain still, and very talkative. ADHD is diagnosed by using a combination of parent and/or patient interview, observation of the patient, and sometimes use of standardized screening instruments. Treatments include making adjustments to the environment to accommodate the disorder, behavior modification, and the use of medications. Stimulants are the most common drugs used, although certain other medications can be effective. (Medicinenet.com) Anyways, as the article stated, it causes me to have a very hard time in school. I also have some bad anxiety. No, I'm not making this thread to b*tch about it, or use excuses, but this does affect me a lot. Anyways, this is really hard for me to come out and say to you guys, because of how bad I do in school. I've always liked to say I do good in school, but the truth is I'm a complete idiot. I can't maintain good grades at all. Last year, I kept a solid 3.4 GPA. Which was good for me. This year, I'm not sure what happened, but I currently have... 3 F's and 2 A's and a C+. *sigh* Anyways, I'm here to ask you guys what you think about taking medication for this. My dad doesn't want me to, but my mom says I should. They fight about it all the time. Anyways, I just can't focus in school at all, and I really need your guys opinion. So please, give me some feedback on what you think I should do. Apparently Aderall (the drug for ADHD) can cause bad side-effects such as loosing appetite, and things like that. Anyways, if you'd like to learn more about it look up ADHD on Google. You'll find some good info about it. Thank you so much for reading, and I hate to ask, but if you have hate comments please keep them to yourself on this thread, because I don't want any arguments to be started. Again, this thread is hard for me to make, so thank you for reading and your opinion is appreciated. I'm not using all these as excuses for why I do bad in school, but it's a big part. Thanks again. - Skar
I'm currently in the process of being diagnosed with ADHD How long did it take you to be diagnosed because its taking forever xD
Medication can help but it is not always effective, depending on the person (not to mention the side effects) . If you want you should try it as a short trial and see if you notice any differences. If they are positive you should continue, if they are negative you should immediately stop taking them and consult with your doctor about other medications or treatments. Good luck
The medication helps you focus but it also causes other stuff as well. You can become more irritable, get headaches from it (if you don't take it Saturday or Sunday you'll have a decent chance of getting a headache Monday), loss of appetite. If you don't want to take medication you can turn in a 504 form signed by your doctor and your teachers will be required to give you more time for tests and quizs.
i would recommend not taking the medicine, i was diagnosed with ADHD last year and at first it took the medication and tbh it was horrible, i was sleepy, never hungry (When i ate it was almost like how you feel after you eat a giant meal and try to eat something else) my head always hurt i didnt really feel good, on the good side i could focus. Do what you think is right, in my experience no medication is better.
My brother has the same thing and takes medication and now he is focused an passes with flying colors
Well, I have been diagnosed with ADHD since I was in 4th grade (I'm in 9th now) and I've always had a little bit of dyslexia so it was very hard for me at school. When I was going to bigger schools (1500+ students) it was over 30 kids per classroom and one teacher, but my parents realized that I wasn't getting the 1 on 1 help that I needed. They moved me to a much smaller private school, but things were still hard. Its been three years since I was at my school and in the end of my first semester was when I started taking ADHD medicine. That's mainly what helped me, you have just got to find what help's you! If you ever need any help with this kinda stuff just start a conversation with me! My medicine makes me lose my appetite, I become less "talkative" (IRL, forums I'm always chatty :3), I become a lot more tired, and depending on the dosage, sometimes it gives people twitches (That's not everyone plus it's temporary)
Thanks so much man! Yeah, I used to take medicine, but. My dad told me I shouldn't take it anymore, then my mom said I should, and they got into an argument about it xd The weird thing is, they didn't know if I had ADHD or not, so I had to get tested AGAIN, and I just did, and yes I have it :/
Well, the medicine helped me academically, the one I take is a 10 hour one so I would be hungry but I won't eat... Its weird, but I think it should be up to you or your doctor
