money printers instead of spawners?

Money printers are a machine that... you guessed it, prints money. I saw this concept in a video about gary's mod but it's very similar to the minecraft spawners. You have a infinite resource that you convert into cash using time. Spawners have a lot of problems. Minecraft in general has a lot of problems when it comes to money. You don't want people to make money afk, because it feels unearned and they get free stuff for existing. But at the same time, you don't want money making to be slow or tedious/a grind because that isn't fun gameplay. Spawners have a lot of issues. One issue is when people afk overnight and get 12 hours of loot in. It's such a ridiculous quantity of loot for so little work. It devalues everything in the game. People can reap even further rewards by using cheating clients to forcefield to kill spawning creatures and even get experience and extra loot from looting swords. Also spawners aren't regulated and people can have a hundred at the same time. The speed doesn't really scale linearly, but it's still a lot of free loot.

What happens is, people afk to get money, then they buy more spawners, repeat, repeat, repeat, and a month later they have infinite money to buy everything they want. It's the same concept as a 1 million block cactus farm. Yes it's a lot of work to initially make it, however it's not fair to have infinite wealth.

Anyway I like this money printers thing because we can create a bunch of tiers. And we can limit each tier, and limit total quantity of printers. So each player could be limited to only like 50 printers, and we can make each printer only hold 3 hours of money. So it would be impossible to use cheats to benefit players. And it wouldn't be possible to get use out of 12 hours of afk. People would have to log in every 3 hours to collect wealth, and I think that would be earning that wealth. So this is a nice middle of the road compromise between fully making infinite money and working for your money.

Sweet, virtual counterfeit money making machines!

Jokes aside, whilst it sounds like a good idea and a good solution to cap the wealth of business tycoons, I feel kinda conflicted about the idea of this replacing spawners.

Looking at the way the server currently is I like the way things are in the sense that I don't personally have a problem with people afk farming if it's their island and they're making use of farms that they've spent a lot of time building (though that's probably down to personal preference), I'm also fine with people playing Minecraft like a tycoon game where you start with very little and through innovating and automating they're able to gradually grow more and more. I mean, that's pretty much how my Skyblock island has evolved from a tiny piece of floating rock to a giant island where pretty much every farm is automated, efficient and I can get to work on other projects whilst my automatic farms collect the look for me. So in that respect I'm happy with things being the way they currently are and the only thing I'd suggest to make the money making process feel like it's earned rather than cheated would be to cap things like Spawn rates when users are offline (which I believe may be an MC mechanic already) and maybe auto-kick people who are afk for a certain time (which may be a bit iffy with afk fountains, I understand). Whenever I've afk farmed in the past it's only ever been for short periods of time, like when I've gone to eat or something (I always turn off the computer when I'm about to sleep or go out), or I've had my alt afk farm whilst I go round on my main account working on a project on the same server. When it comes to capping something on Minecraft which naturally isn't capped (*cough* 100 hopper limit *cough* 50 villager limit *cough* on Skyblock *cough*) then that's where I draw the line, especially since it's on a sandbox game where anything and everything should be limitless/endless and down to the user's imagination (If they want to spawn in so much stuff that they lag like crazy then so be it, that's their responsibility and they do so at their own risk).

When it comes to replacing an existing Minecraft/server feature for another, well, we all know how that's turned out in the past (*cough* Animal taming plugin *cough* replacing animal stacking plugin *cough* messing up spawn rates *cough* stopping villagers from trading *cough* on Skyblock *cough*). It's good that you're learning from your past mistakes and allowing an open discussion like this so the players have a say in how they want the server run and everyone's aware of what's going on before it potentially happens. But I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you once again to make sure you look into the full ins and outs of a new plugin you want to introduce and compare it to the way the server works before you consider implementing it or replacing an existing server feature. I don't wanna have to explain what's happened on your behalf and have to wait until a mass outcry that the plugin is bad before you consider changing your mind, that's damaging for your reputation and is gonna harm the server's reputation as well.

Now, lets discuss what your plugin is supposed to be replacing, Mob spawners. I don't have a problem with the use of mob spawners, nor do I have a problem with using one spawner to make money to pave the way to buying more spawners. I don't know what they're like on all the other servers, however, I do know that they have been pretty hit and miss on Skyblock in the past. I've tried making farms which are enhanced by spawners, and whilst most of them have worked out okay I have found the slime spawners to be hugely unreliable and therefore a waste of money. I don't know, maybe the conditions aren't right, mind you I'm pretty sure it's the spawners themselves which aren't working properly. So in that sense, I don't have a problem with replacing something that's broken for something new and innovative.

Anyway, time for the flipside, because I like to look at a situation from multiple sides before making (or in some cases - not making) an informed judgement. Lets talk about the money printers themselves.

The concept sounds good, it reminds me of the iron/gold/diamond/emerald generators from Bed Wars/Cake Wars/Egg Wars. I had a bunch of questions but looking through the Spigot page, particularly the gif, answered a lot of my questions. One thing that I don't think was answered on the page was about printer damage, it makes sense for printers to take damage in somewhere like Factions, but surely they don't need to take damage in peaceful servers like Skyblock. So is there a way to enable/disable printer damage from external (non-owner based) sources? It seems like moving multiple damaged printers would be a bit of hard work for beginners and you have to spend money to repair a printer in the first place before you can move it. Also, the Spigot details that there's already 5 pre-configured printers which come with the plugin, which suggests to me that more materials can be used that aren't necessarily minerals/mined goods, which could add a bit more flexibility and variety to the money making process (in the same sense that lots of stuff can be sold in the server shops).

All in all, I can understand how printers could be a good solution to capping the money making process and stopping tycoons for setting up shop on a server near you. Although I am yet to see how you would stop money being made via alternative means. Spawners should be easy, just disable them, but what about things like cactus farms? Is there gonna be some sort of cool down on how much you can sell over a certain period of time or what?
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, I'm probably gonna remain neutral in the discuss for the time being. Maybe I will come to embrace it later if/when I understand the full ins and outs of the plugin and how it's gonna affect/change the way things are done on the server (which I hope you will do as well Surge to avoid plugin conflicts etc). It sounds like a good idea in concept but I'd rather know how it's gonna affect the server before it actually gets implemented.

Fair enough, I mean some of the info/suggestions/things to consider that I mentioned may be worth passing onto other players should we all feel that this would be beneficial for the server. But I'm happy to talk through it privately in advance. I've got you on Skype already and the invite code points to the Squadcraft Official discord server which I'm already in at the moment so fire away.
